Connor and Melissa were two young people very much in love, and their surprise proposal in Paros was one of those shoots where we were able to combine two completely different sides of the island in one experience.

We started with the proposal and the first part of their photoshoot in Kolymbithres, surrounded by the beautiful granite rock formations and the Aegean Sea. After spending an hour there, we got in the car and headed to Naoussa, where we continued for another hour, walking through the village and photographing them in a completely different setting.

That combination worked beautifully because they didn't have to choose between a beach-and-landscape experience and the atmosphere of a traditional Cycladic village. They got both.

A Proposal Surrounded by the Landscape of Paros

Kolymbithres was the perfect place to begin. The unusual rock formations make it one of the most recognizable landscapes in Paros, but what I love most about photographing couples there is how naturally the rocks, sea and sky become part of the photographs. For a surprise proposal, though, there is another consideration: the location has to work for the plan, not just look beautiful in photographs. That's something I always think about when helping couples organize a proposal in Greece. Where will I stand? Where will you approach from? Will the surprise make sense? What will the light be doing? And what happens immediately afterwards? The photograph is only the final result. There is quite a lot happening before I ever press the shutter.

From Kolymbithres to Naoussa

After the proposal and our first hour together in Kolymbithres, we drove to Naoussa. I really liked having this second part of the session because the atmosphere changed completely. Instead of the open landscape and dramatic rocks of Kolymbithres, we had the little streets, white Cycladic buildings, colorful details and the waterfront of Naoussa.

It also gave Connor and Melissa time to simply enjoy the fact that they were engaged.

There was no more secret to keep. We could walk around, stop whenever we saw something beautiful, talk, laugh and take photographs without worrying about whether Melissa knew what was coming. And I think that is one of the nicest things about doing a longer proposal photoshoot. The proposal is the beginning of the experience, not the end of it.

Two Hours, Two Different Paros Experiences

One of the things I love about Paros is how much variety you can fit into a relatively short amount of time.In just two hours, Connor and Melissa experienced two very different environments: One hour in Kolymbithres — dramatic rocks, open sea and the natural landscape of Paros. One hour in Naoussa — whitewashed streets, the village atmosphere and the Aegean character that makes Paros so special. The result was a gallery that felt much more varied than if we'd stayed in one place for the entire session.

And this is something I often discuss with couples who are planning their proposal. You don't necessarily have to choose one location and stay there for two hours. Depending on the logistics and the time available, moving between two nearby settings can give you a much richer collection of photographs. Of course, it needs to be planned properly. You don't want to spend half your photoshoot sitting in traffic or rushing from one place to another. That's where local knowledge matters.

Photographing a Couple Who Are Simply in Love

What I remember most about Connor and Melissa was how young and happy they were together. They had that lovely energy that makes photographing a couple feel easy. Once the proposal was over, there was nothing complicated to do. They were simply enjoying each other and enjoying the fact that they were now engaged. That's what I look for when I'm photographing couples. I'm not trying to create a perfect-looking relationship for the camera. I'm looking for the real one that's already there. Sometimes that means giving a little direction. Sometimes it means asking you to walk together or move somewhere with better light. And sometimes it means stepping back and letting you forget that I'm even there. The photographs should still feel like you.

Why I Love Photographing Proposals in Paros

I've photographed proposals in different parts of Greece, but Paros has a particular advantage for this kind of experience. You can have the dramatic natural landscape of places like Kolymbithres and then, not far away, find yourself walking through a beautiful Cycladic village like Naoussa. For couples traveling from the US or elsewhere, that variety can be really valuable. You're not just getting photographs of the proposal itself. You're creating a visual record of your time in Greece together. And for me, that's what makes destination photography worthwhile.

You're not booking someone simply to take pictures. You're trusting someone to understand the place, the light, the logistics and the feeling you're hoping to preserve. With more than ten years behind the camera, I approach these sessions with an editorial eye, but I never want the photographs to lose the genuine emotion of the people in them.
