Matthew and Stephanie are from Canada, but Stephanie has Greek roots. When Matthew contacted me about two months before their trip, he told me that he wanted to propose in Greece because of how meaningful the country was to both of them, especially to Stephanie. He had a very personal reason for choosing Greece. He wanted the proposal to reflect her heritage and the beauty of her culture, while creating a memory they would carry with them into the next chapter of their lives. And Corfu felt like the perfect place to do it.

A Proposal With a Story Behind It
When Matthew told me about their relationship, it was clear that this wasn't simply a destination proposal. They had started as friends, and Stephanie was still his best friend. She was the person he laughed with, leaned on and shared his life with. He wanted to ask her to marry him in a place that celebrated her roots and represented something meaningful about who she was. That made Corfu more than just a beautiful backdrop. It became part of their story.
Choosing the Right Side of Corfu Old Town
Matthew originally loved the idea of Corfu Old Town. The colourful buildings, traditional Greek streets, and beautiful architecture. But their proposal was taking place in July, and July in Greece can be very hot. So rather than taking them deep into the Old Town streets, I suggested that we make the most of the coastal side of the historic centre. It turned out to be the right decision. We planned the photoshoot around sunset and spent most of our time along the coast, where they could enjoy the sea breeze and the beautiful evening light without having to navigate the busiest parts of the Old Town.
This is one of those details that can be easy to overlook when planning a proposal from another country. A location can look incredible in photographs, but that doesn't automatically mean it will be the best place for the actual experience. Professional proposal photography involves much more than choosing a pretty backdrop. The timing, temperature, crowds, light, movement and comfort of the couple all matter when you're planning a moment that can't be repeated.
A Sunset Proposal in Corfu
As the sun began to go down, the light became softer and warmer, and the coastline created a beautiful setting for the proposal. Matthew and Stephanie arrived, and she had no idea what he had planned. Everything had been arranged in advance, and my job was to stay discreet and let the moment happen naturally. Then Matthew proposed. And Stephanie said yes. There is something very special about photographing a proposal when you know why the couple chose the place. This wasn't simply a beautiful sunset in Corfu. For them, it was a moment connected to Stephanie's Greek heritage and to the story they had already shared together.
Capturing What Came After
Once the surprise was over, the atmosphere completely changed. The secret was finally out, and they could relax and enjoy being engaged. We continued photographing them around the coastline, capturing the excitement of the evening and giving them photographs that went beyond the actual proposal. This is one of my favorite parts of proposal photography. The proposal itself lasts only a few seconds. The hugs, laughter, excitement and quiet moments afterward are part of the story too. And those are often the photographs couples treasure just as much.
A Proposal That Meant Something
What I love most about Matthew and Stephanie's story is that the location wasn't chosen simply because Corfu is beautiful. It was chosen because Greece meant something to them. Matthew wanted to propose somewhere connected to Stephanie's heritage and to give her a memory that felt personal to their relationship. Corfu gave them the scenery, the sea and the atmosphere, but the meaning behind the proposal came from their own story. And that's ultimately what makes a proposal unforgettable. Not simply the location. Not simply the photographs. The meaning behind the moment.
