Some proposal stories stay with me because of the location. Others because of the couple. Charlie and Kieran’s proposal was memorable for both.

Charlie contacted me in January, several months before their trip to Paros. He had already decided that he wanted to propose during their holiday and wanted a professional photographer to capture the moment without Kieran having any idea what was coming.

He found me online, liked my work and reached out with his idea. We planned everything in advance, and he followed the booking process from our video call through to confirming the photoshoot. Having several months to prepare meant that we could think through the details properly rather than trying to organize everything at the last minute.

A Quiet Spot by the Aegean

Charlie wanted to propose somewhere beautiful, with the Aegean Sea as the backdrop. I helped him choose a spot along the rocky coastline between Naoussa and Piperi Beach. I love this area for proposals because it feels much more intimate than some of the busier parts of Naoussa. The rocks create a beautiful natural setting, with the sea stretching out behind you and plenty of space to enjoy the moment. We arranged a specific meeting point, and I was waiting for them there. When Charlie and Kieran arrived, she had absolutely no idea why I was there or what Charlie had planned. Everything went exactly as we had discussed.

That might sound simple, but making a surprise proposal look effortless is part of the job. There is preparation behind the scenes: choosing the right location, working out where I need to be, considering the light and surroundings, communicating discreetly and making sure the person being proposed to doesn't suspect anything. You're not just hiring someone to take a few photographs. You're trusting a professional with a moment you can never recreate.

A Beautiful May Sunset

Their proposal took place in May, which is such a lovely time to be in Paros. The weather was warm but not yet as intense as it can be in the middle of summer. We had some wind, as you sometimes do on the Greek islands, but it didn't get in the way. Most importantly, we had beautiful evening light. As the sun began to go down, the Aegean became the perfect backdrop for their proposal. And then Charlie proposed. Kieran had no idea. She said yes. It was one of those moments that doesn't need any direction. The surprise, the excitement and the happiness were completely genuine.

Two People Very Much in Love

What stood out to me most about Charlie and Kieran was their energy together. They were young, beautifully dressed and completely in love. They had such lovely chemistry and were so comfortable with each other that photographing them afterwards felt incredibly natural. There was no need to manufacture emotion or create complicated poses. They were simply happy to be together and excited about what had just happened. After the proposal, we spent the rest of our two-hour session exploring the area and photographing them as an engaged couple. We captured a mixture of intimate portraits, wider photographs with the Paros landscape, horizontal and vertical compositions, as well as both colour and black-and-white images. The result was a varied gallery that told the story of the evening rather than giving them only a handful of photographs of the proposal itself. This is one of the reasons I recommend allowing enough time for proposal photography. The proposal lasts only a few seconds. The memories that follow can fill an entire evening.

More Than Just the Moment of the Proposal

I also filmed a little behind-the-scenes content with my phone during the session, giving Charlie and Kieran another way to remember the evening. For me, this is what makes proposal photography so rewarding. I'm not there simply to photograph someone getting down on one knee. I'm there from the planning stage, helping make sure the idea works in reality. I'm thinking about the location, the timing, the light, where I'll stand, how I'll approach the couple and how I can capture the reaction without interfering.

Then, after the shoot, there is the creative work of selecting and editing the photographs and creating a gallery that feels cohesive and personal. A professional surprise proposal photographer brings experience, preparation, discretion and an artistic eye to something that can only happen once.

A Beautiful Evening to Remember

Everything came together beautifully that evening. Charlie had planned his proposal months in advance. Kieran didn't suspect anything. The weather was wonderful, the location was quiet, the sunset light was beautiful, and they were able to relax and enjoy being engaged for the rest of the evening. We had a genuinely lovely time together, and I was delighted to receive such wonderful feedback from Charlie afterwards.

These are the moments that remind me why I love what I do. The photographs are important, but so is the experience of creating them.
